The Story of Our Founder (Plus a Birthday Shout-Out!)

Today is Foot Levelers’ CEO’s birthday–Happy Birthday Kent!–which got us reminiscing about Foot Levelers’ humble beginning, all the way back in 1952. The company, after all, was started by Kent’s father, the renowned Chiropractor Dr. Monte H. Greenawalt, who at that time was not all that well-known–he was fresh out of Chiropractic college, just starting his practice from the basement of a bank in Dubuque, Iowa.

Foot Levelers is literally in Kent’s blood, so sharing the company, and family, story seemed a fitting way to honor him today. It’s a pretty remarkable story, and we hope you enjoy it.

It was 1942, and World War II was raging. A young man from Iowa, Monte H. Greenawalt, wanted to help, so he signed up for the Army.

But Monte’s preparations didn’t go as planned. As part of his pre-service requirements, he required vaccinations. Tragedy struck. A tainted batch killed many young men, and Monte was left paralyzed, forced to lie in an iron lung for six months.

Doctor after doctor told his devastated family that Monte would live the rest of his life as a paraplegic. His mother wouldn’t hear it. She eventually sought out a local Chiropractor, who was able to restore her son’s mobility.

“They carried him in and he walked out,” Monte’s mother would later recall.

Monte’s path was now clear. Though he had planned to study medicine after his enlistment, his personal experience with the power of Chiropractic changed all that. In 1948, a newly minted Dr. Monte graduated from Lincoln Chiropractic College.

An early version of our custom-made orthotics

As a young Doctor practicing in Dubuque, Dr. Monte began to notice a pattern: patients with foot problems, especially, were returning to him with the same back, joint, knee and hip problems they started with—his Chiropractic adjustments just weren’t holding. Dr. Monte referred these patients to a podiatrist, but their problems persisted. In fact, many got worse. If a foot device could make his patients’ problems worse, he wondered, could it also potentially make these problems better?

Dr. Monte began to experiment with orthotics, and through trial and error, developed a formula based on 16 unique measurements of the foot. His patients began to feel better, results improved; his adjustments held longer. The referrals started flowing in, and eventually Dr. Monte’s little garage workshop couldn’t handle the demand. Foot Levelers moved to an old dairy; years later, the company relocated across the country to Roanoke, Virginia–making it easier to reach patients with its products quicker–and that’s where it remains, with Monte’s son (our birthday boy) at the helm. Sadly, Dr. Monte passed away in 2007.

Susan Loves Her Custom Orthotic Flip-flops (and So Will You!)

We love hearing from our patients! Thanks Susan!

“I absolutely love my Foot Levelers’ custom orthotic flip-flops. The first time I tried them on was the day I was flying to Orlando for a convention. I put them on that morning, walked through the entire airport and still had them on late into the evening. My feet, knees and low back felt great and that never would have happened in any other kind of flip-flops. I have worn Foot Levelers orthotics for over 20 years so I understand the importance of wearing the right shoe with the right correction.”

How Many Pairs of Shoes Do You Own? (And Are You Sure?)

Let’s face it. No one wears the same shoes all the time, because there’s more to life than just the office or gym. In fact, the average American owns an average of 19 pairs of shoes at any given time!

We challenged our employees to get out their shoes, count ’em, and take a picture. (Our “winner” so far on number of pairs owned is Corrie, 125 pairs of shoes!)

10509506_10155783080130332_2648812692891381254_n(1)

How many pairs do you THINK you have? And how many do you ACTUALLY have?

Answer the first question in your head, and then take a moment to do an actual count. You’ll be surprised.

To optimize the health benefits of custom orthotics, you should be supported with every step, during every activity.  Make sure you have multiple pairs of orthotics for your multiple pairs of shoes. Your feet and body will thank you!

Pick Your Perfect Shoe, Protect Your Body’s Foundation

What’s in a shoe?

Consider this: the average American takes 5,900 steps a day.1  Most people will walk thousands of miles over a lifetime.

With each step, improper footwear can cause degenerative changes in the muscles, joints and connective tissues of the feet.  Feet are the body’s foundation—when that’s compromised, everything above may shift. A body out of alignment is a body in pain, one that’s more prone to injury and disease.

woman stretching in sand

Ladies—we hope you’re listening (!), because you, especially, are at risk.  A survey on women’s shoes found that 88% of women were wearing shoes that were smaller than their feet (by an avg. of 12 cm!). Is it any wonder that 80%  reported “some foot pain” and that 76% of the women surveyed were found to have one or more foot deformity?

What’s more, high heels and pointed shoes especially can cause bunions, knee pain, and lower back pain. Heels also shift enormous pressure onto the fatty pad of the forefoot, which can lead to early breakdown and injury. The higher the heel, the greater the danger.

So here’s a quick reference guide for choosing shoes that are right for you…

Say “YES” to shoes…

  • With a square or wide toe box
  • With a heel lower than two inches high
  • With 1/2 inch of space between your longest toe and the tip of the shoe
  • With arch support (for all three of the foot’s arches, ideally)
  • With wiggle room for toes–especially the big toe

Just say “NO” to…

  • Too high heels (sorry ladies…If you MUST wear them, try to do so for no more than two hours at a time)
  • Stiletto heels (awful for balance—if you’ve got to go with heels, choose chunky instead!)
  • Pointy toed shoes (heels or otherwise)
  • Flat-as-a-board footwear like many summer sandals (if you must, fit them with orthotics)

A few more considerations:

  • Don’t go by size alone: different manufacturers size differently, plus the feet tend to grow larger as we age. With pregnancy, you can gain up to a size!
  • Because the feet swell throughout the day—by up to 8%—do your shoe shopping toward the end of the day to ensure ample fit

Your body is your vehicle for that great adventure called Life—why risk premature break-down along the road? Wearing custom orthotics in every pair of shoes gives you the support you need for a long and fruitful journey. Shoethotics and Sandalthotics are a great choice too, because they take all the guesswork out of selecting healthy footwear, plus they’re pre-fitted with custom orthotics made just for you.

PS: We’re excited about our new custom orthotic flip-flops for guys and gals alike, which offer all the fashion and comfort of regular flip-flops, ‘cept with healthy three arch support.
