The paper follows up on recent recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control  (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM), which urge a shift away from opioid use in treating chronic pain. Nearly 30,000 Americans died from opioid overdose in 2014, a number that has tripled since 2000. The opioid epidemic is a very serious problem.
