Giving Back to Our City Schools

Foot Levelers is more than “just” custom orthotics; we’re a technology company, too. Most of the doctors we work with use our proprietary 3D scanning technology to capture images of patients’ feet; these images are instantaneously sent through the magical interwebs to our lab in Roanoke, Virginia. These are the “blueprints” for building patients’ custom orthotics.

Many of those 3D scanning systems include a laptop pre-loaded with our scanning software to help run the machine. When doctors upgrade or switch their systems, sometimes those laptops are no longer needed, so they are returned to us. read more

From the article: “One study looked at the foot biomechanics of athletes who reported a recent foot or leg injury and compared them to an uninjured control group.2 The researchers determined that those athletes with more foot pronation had a much greater statistical probability of sustaining one of five leg injuries, including iliotibial band syndrome (which is due to excessive tightness of the hip abductor muscles). read more

The Story of Our Founder (Plus a Birthday Shout-Out!)

Today is Foot Levelers’ CEO’s birthday–Happy Birthday Kent!–which got us reminiscing about Foot Levelers’ humble beginning, all the way back in 1952. The company, after all, was started by Kent’s father, the renowned Chiropractor Dr. Monte H. Greenawalt, who at that time was not all that well-known–he was fresh out of Chiropractic college, just starting his practice from the basement of a bank in Dubuque, Iowa.

Foot Levelers is literally in Kent’s blood, so sharing the company, and family, story seemed a fitting way to honor him today. It’s a pretty remarkable story, and we hope you enjoy it. read more

    What’s a Subluxation? Plus: How to Make Your Adjustments Last Longer and Stronger

    You know how great you feel as you leave your Chiropractor’s office?

    feelin good

    (These guys clearly just left the Chiropractor’s)

    You’re energetic, but not edgy. Calm, clear-headed and alert. If you came in with pain, it’s likely that it feels lessened; perhaps, it’s even disappeared (hallelujah!).

    It’s as if every cell of your body just seems to be humming in unison, and that all is right with the world!

    There’s a reason for that! In Chiropractic-speak, your Doctor’s adjustment has helped to eliminate subluxations in your spine. The term subluxation describes what happens when spinal joints are shifted out of ideal alignment thanks to stress, trauma, or chemical imbalances. read more

    A Beautiful Spine

    “Stand up straight!”the familiar battle cry of moms and teachers everywhere.

    It’s time to listen up — because poor posture doesn’t just look frumpy, it takes a serious toll on health.  Here are just a few of the results:

    • Muscle soreness
    • Subluxations
    • Blood vessel constriction
    • Nerve constriction

    …As the years pile up, so do the problems, resulting in pain, restricted motion, and making the body more and more susceptible to injury and disease. (Read more about the posture-health connection here).

    After all, your spine does more than keep your body upright: it’s the way that Command Central (the brain) “talks” to everything else.  read more

    Pick Your Perfect Shoe, Protect Your Body’s Foundation

    What’s in a shoe?

    Consider this: the average American takes 5,900 steps a day.1  Most people will walk thousands of miles over a lifetime.

    With each step, improper footwear can cause degenerative changes in the muscles, joints and connective tissues of the feet.  Feet are the body’s foundation—when that’s compromised, everything above may shift. A body out of alignment is a body in pain, one that’s more prone to injury and disease.

    woman stretching in sand

    Ladies—we hope you’re listening (!), because you, especially, are at risk.  A survey on women’s shoes found that 88% of women were wearing shoes that were smaller than their feet (by an avg. of 12 cm!). Is it any wonder that 80%  reported “some foot pain” and that 76% of the women surveyed were found to have one or more foot deformity? read more

    Almost Half of 16-24 Year Olds Have Neck/Back Pain, Says BCA

    Think back pain only affects the middle aged and up? Think again. The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) found almost half of 16-24 year olds are living with neck/back pain.  This is a worrisome trend, one that is linked to an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, much of it work related.  What can we do to combat it?

    back and neck pain

    For folks of any age

    • Sit up straight while working, web surfing, reading, gaming;
    • Adjust your screen to healthy position;
    • Take breaks from sitting every 20-30 minutes.

    Consider custom-made orthotics for help with back and neck pain; the research shows they’re effective. For workers who stand for long periods of time, orthotics can also help by reducing associated symptoms (leg swelling, tingling, low back pain). read more
