Giving Back to Our City Schools

Foot Levelers is more than “just” custom orthotics; we’re a technology company, too. Most of the doctors we work with use our proprietary 3D scanning technology to capture images of patients’ feet; these images are instantaneously sent through the magical interwebs to our lab in Roanoke, Virginia. These are the “blueprints” for building patients’ custom orthotics.

Many of those 3D scanning systems include a laptop pre-loaded with our scanning software to help run the machine. When doctors upgrade or switch their systems, sometimes those laptops are no longer needed, so they are returned to us.

L-R: Dan Sweeney, Brian Boggs, Chris Cummings of Foot Levelers and Mark Thompson and Britt Simmons of Roanoke City Schools.

That means we’ve amassed quite a collection of laptops over the last few years–150 to be exact.  We knew we wanted to donate them, but where? Someone suggested our very own Roanoke City Public School System and a plan was hatched!

School district reps were delighted to have more tools to serve local students. “Just wow!” said Roanoke City Public School’s Director of Technology Mark Thompson. “That was extremely generous.”

Many kudos to Foot Levelers’ Tech Support Team, especially Brian Boggs and Lamont Clements, for working so hard to prepare the laptops for donation.  We were pleased to have members of the media join us for the hand-off yesterday too–you can check out stories from WSLS Channel 10 here and from WDBJ Channel 7 here

Breaking: Study Validates Foot Levelers Custom Orthotics Significantly Reduce Low Back Pain, Help Reduce Reliance on Opioids

What could eclipse the eclipse?

In our world–in the world of safe, effective pain management and the fight to save lives as the national opioid emergency rages on–it’s a new, major research study that proves what we’ve know for over 65 years:

Foot Levelers + Chiropractic care significantly reduce Chronic Low Back Pain

by an average of 40.4 percent.

Published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the study hits the print stands September 1. Click here or scroll down to view the full news release.

Foot Levelers custom orthotics, like Chiropractic care, are safe, painless, non-invasive and cost-effective–in stark contrast to risky, expensive surgery.  It’s important to note that Chiropractic is, and has always been, a proudly drug-free approach to care.

Got Pain? Avoid the knife and potentially life-threatening drugs. Call 800.553.4860 to find a Foot Levelers doctor near you.

ROANOKE, VA—August 22, 2017—A conclusive new study, “Shoe Orthotics for the Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial” conducted by National University of Health Sciences and published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation shows that Foot Levelers custom orthotics, particularly in combination with chiropractic care, significantly reduce Low Back Pain (LBP). The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports 80 percent of adults experience LBP at some point in their lifetime and it’s the single leading cause of disability worldwide, with many taking prescription drugs for pain relief – which often leads to long-term drug abuse and addiction.

GCS

“The study unequivocally confirms what we have known for over 65 years: Foot Levelers custom orthotics are a powerful first-line treatment in the battle against LBP,” says Kent S. Greenawalt, CEO of Foot Levelers, the world’s leading provider of custom-made functional orthotics and other therapeutic products. “There is significant scientific evidence that explains the foot-spine connection, but the bottom line is that using Foot Levelers to balance and support the feet—the foundation of the body—helps balance and support the spine. This study is another striking development in the case for evidence-based, conservative care of LBP, which in the face of America’s ongoing opioid crisis, is more important news than ever.”

Key Findings

  • Foot Levelers orthotics significantly reduce Low Back Pain 34.5 percent
  • Foot Levelers orthotics plus chiropractic care reduce Low Back Pain 40.4 percent
  • Foot Levelers alone or in conjunction with chiropractic care improves function:  18.5 percent and 32.3 percent, respectively

Methodology

  • Outcomes assessed at six weeks. Outcomes also assessed after 12 weeks, and then after an additional three, six, and 12 months.
  • Improvements in both pain and in function as measured on the Numeric Pain Rating Scale and functional health status (Oswestry) scale.
  • 225 subjects with LBP were randomly assigned to one of three groups:
  1. Wait-list: no treatment for 6 weeks.
  2. Foot Levelers Shoe Orthotic Group: treatment plan consisted of Foot Levelers custom orthotics only.
  3. Plus Group: treatment plan of Foot Levelers custom orthotics plus chiropractic care.

Manuel Duarte, DC, MSAc, DABCO, and DACBSP, Chair of Clinical Practice at National University of Health Sciences, (Lombard, IL) and one of the study’s lead researchers, says, “LBP is one of the most common reasons cited for missed work and the NIH study confirms more than one quarter of adults reported LBP during the past three months.  Most alarming is the link between LBP and the deadly opioid epidemic, a challenge that is effectively addressed when Foot Levelers custom orthotics and drug-free chiropractic care are the first-line approach for LBP pain management.”

Dr. Kris at the Sports Chiropractic Symposium Australia: Tweens, Teens and Young Adult Female Athletes

Here’s more from our awesome Dr. Kristina Petrocco-Napuli (“Dr. Kris”) who’s traveling through Australia lecturing on Chiropractic’s important role in women’s wellness. We’re honored to have such a wonderful doctor and educator on our team!

untitledFICS and Sports Chiropractic Australia

One word to describe this group….AMAZING! It was so wonderful to meet a group of Chiropractors on the same mission of patient centered care and leading the way in the profession. At this conference I met a variety of practitioners from around Australia as well as students from Macquarie University, Murdoch University and New Zealand College of Chiropractic.

Angelica Gaunt of Foot Levelers Australia, Dr. Lorenzo Campagna Current Sports Chiropractor NSW Chairman, Debbie Kelly-CCA and me!

The topic for my presentation at the conference was: The Female Athlete: Tweens, Teens and Young Adults. During the presentation one of the topics of interest was assisting the female athlete in understanding how to optimize training in correlation with her menstrual cycle and the impact it can have. In addition, the correlation of the biomechanics of the pelvis and conditions which effect the female patient.

The conference concluded very nicely with a gender balanced discussion panel of many untitled2speakers from the weekend related to sports Chiropractic practice….It was an incredible honor to be included.

A huge thank you to the CCA and Sports Chiropractic of Australia for including me as speaker!

As the conference ended it was now time for a walk to see some of the rest of Sydney….off to the Opera it was!

Stay tuned….. for tomorrow is a board lecture in Sydney!

Hip Injuries in Sports: How Orthotics Can Help

soccer shot

Great piece in Circle of Docs from Dr. Mark Charrette on hip injuries in sports–how to prevent and treat them with custom orthotics.  Check it out here!

From the article: “One study looked at the foot biomechanics of athletes who reported a recent foot or leg injury and compared them to an uninjured control group.2 The researchers determined that those athletes with more foot pronation had a much greater statistical probability of sustaining one of five leg injuries, including iliotibial band syndrome (which is due to excessive tightness of the hip abductor muscles).

This study helps us understand how providing appropriate functional foot orthotic support to patients who are involved in sports or recreational activities lowers their likelihood of developing both traumatic and overuse hip injuries.”

The Story of Our Founder (Plus a Birthday Shout-Out!)

Today is Foot Levelers’ CEO’s birthday–Happy Birthday Kent!–which got us reminiscing about Foot Levelers’ humble beginning, all the way back in 1952. The company, after all, was started by Kent’s father, the renowned Chiropractor Dr. Monte H. Greenawalt, who at that time was not all that well-known–he was fresh out of Chiropractic college, just starting his practice from the basement of a bank in Dubuque, Iowa.

Foot Levelers is literally in Kent’s blood, so sharing the company, and family, story seemed a fitting way to honor him today. It’s a pretty remarkable story, and we hope you enjoy it.

It was 1942, and World War II was raging. A young man from Iowa, Monte H. Greenawalt, wanted to help, so he signed up for the Army.

But Monte’s preparations didn’t go as planned. As part of his pre-service requirements, he required vaccinations. Tragedy struck. A tainted batch killed many young men, and Monte was left paralyzed, forced to lie in an iron lung for six months.

Doctor after doctor told his devastated family that Monte would live the rest of his life as a paraplegic. His mother wouldn’t hear it. She eventually sought out a local Chiropractor, who was able to restore her son’s mobility.

“They carried him in and he walked out,” Monte’s mother would later recall.

Monte’s path was now clear. Though he had planned to study medicine after his enlistment, his personal experience with the power of Chiropractic changed all that. In 1948, a newly minted Dr. Monte graduated from Lincoln Chiropractic College.

An early version of our custom-made orthotics

As a young Doctor practicing in Dubuque, Dr. Monte began to notice a pattern: patients with foot problems, especially, were returning to him with the same back, joint, knee and hip problems they started with—his Chiropractic adjustments just weren’t holding. Dr. Monte referred these patients to a podiatrist, but their problems persisted. In fact, many got worse. If a foot device could make his patients’ problems worse, he wondered, could it also potentially make these problems better?

Dr. Monte began to experiment with orthotics, and through trial and error, developed a formula based on 16 unique measurements of the foot. His patients began to feel better, results improved; his adjustments held longer. The referrals started flowing in, and eventually Dr. Monte’s little garage workshop couldn’t handle the demand. Foot Levelers moved to an old dairy; years later, the company relocated across the country to Roanoke, Virginia–making it easier to reach patients with its products quicker–and that’s where it remains, with Monte’s son (our birthday boy) at the helm. Sadly, Dr. Monte passed away in 2007.
