Birthday Surprise for Kent!

Out today, the latest issue of Valley Business Front magazine couldn’t have come at a better time. Today is our CEO Kent’s birthday, and Kent was chosen as one of just eight regional business leaders to earn the distinction of “2017 Business Icon”! Congratulations Kent!

Valley Business Front‘s writers focused on Kent’s personal and professional philanthropy as well as the incredible success of Foot Levelers under his visionary leadership.  It’s a well-deserved honor for our favorite birthday boy!

Happy birthday Kent, and a big congrats! Thanks for all you do to make Foot Levelers a great place to work and your Southwest Virginia community a better place to live, work, and play. We’re also so proud to be part of your impassioned movement for bringing natural, non-invasive, evidence-based treatment options to patients in pain–not only here, but all around the world, too. You are making a big difference through your work, and we’re honored to be on your “A Team.”

Best wishes, Your Foot Levelers Family

Giving Back to Our City Schools

Foot Levelers is more than “just” custom orthotics; we’re a technology company, too. Most of the doctors we work with use our proprietary 3D scanning technology to capture images of patients’ feet; these images are instantaneously sent through the magical interwebs to our lab in Roanoke, Virginia. These are the “blueprints” for building patients’ custom orthotics.

Many of those 3D scanning systems include a laptop pre-loaded with our scanning software to help run the machine. When doctors upgrade or switch their systems, sometimes those laptops are no longer needed, so they are returned to us.

L-R: Dan Sweeney, Brian Boggs, Chris Cummings of Foot Levelers and Mark Thompson and Britt Simmons of Roanoke City Schools.

That means we’ve amassed quite a collection of laptops over the last few years–150 to be exact.  We knew we wanted to donate them, but where? Someone suggested our very own Roanoke City Public School System and a plan was hatched!

School district reps were delighted to have more tools to serve local students. “Just wow!” said Roanoke City Public School’s Director of Technology Mark Thompson. “That was extremely generous.”

Many kudos to Foot Levelers’ Tech Support Team, especially Brian Boggs and Lamont Clements, for working so hard to prepare the laptops for donation.  We were pleased to have members of the media join us for the hand-off yesterday too–you can check out stories from WSLS Channel 10 here and from WDBJ Channel 7 here

Media Alert: Foot Levelers Announces Roanoke-Based 3D Technology Division

ROANOKE, VA—September 8, 2017Foot Levelers is growing again with the expansion of its Technology Division at its Roanoke, Virginia-based Headquarters. This expansion will add jobs in engineering, management, and production.

Deborah Beebe

Deborah Beebe, a veteran in high tech product innovation and 3D engineering and printing, will lead the new, expanded division as Foot Levelers CTO (Chief Technology Officer). Ms. Beebe was most recently based in Rock Hill, South Carolina; her résumé touts 11 years as Senior Director of Engineering at 3D Systems.

The transition begins immediately and is expected to be complete by the end of this year. Foot Levelers’ Technology Division invented such breakthrough innovations as the Foot Levelers 3D BodyView scanner and patient Kiosks.

A patient gives the Kiosk a whirl as C.A. Lexi Zoppetti looks on at Bompiani Spine & Sport in Latrobe, PA.

“We’re bringing the world to Roanoke,” says Kent S. Greenawalt, Foot Levelers President and CEO. “With this incredible wealth of talent, knowledge, and cutting-edge technology under one roof, Foot Levelers is poised to bring unprecedented innovation to healthcare. We’re also backed by 65 years of experience and a growing body of peer-reviewed research. We’re making inroads into safe, drug-free pain management. This could not be more important with the opioid crisis in our country today.”

Today’s announcement is part of an ongoing story of growth for the 65-year-old company. Started as a small, family business in Dubuque, Iowa in 1952, today Foot Levelers serves thousands of providers and millions of patients in over 85 countries. In 2014, Foot Levelers opened an office in Sydney, Australia, followed by a second in Belgrade, Serbia in 2016. Foot Levelers has long been the leader in orthotics for Chiropractic patients, with an expanding presence in Physical Therapy, Podiatry, Family Medicine, Massage Therapy, and Acupuncture, among other health disciplines.

In September, the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation published a watershed study proving that Foot Levelers custom orthotics, particularly in conjunction with Chiropractic care, significantly reduce Low Back Pain (LBP)—by 40.4 percent. This study is critically important because the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports 80 percent of adults experience LBP. LBP is the single leading cause of disability worldwide, with many patients taking dangerous opioids for relief. “Foot Levelers and Chiropractic can make a difference in the opioid crisis,” Greenawalt adds.

Rory’s Story (and The Case of the Missing Orthotic)

The most rewarding part of working for Foot Levelers? Helping patients–no question.

And Rory’s story is one of our favorites.

Earlier this month, our gal Tammy, who works in our Sales & Service Department, read about the plight of an adorable little guy all the way across the pond in Lancashire, England. Six-year-old Rory was born four months premature, leaving him with sensory, physical, and neurological issues. He’s unable to walk, but with ongoing therapy his parents hope that one day he will.

To stand, Rory wears a special support frame plus custom orthotics custom-made at a U.S. lab. From a special vest that helps Rory breathe, to ongoing therapies, tests, and nutritional supplements, Rory’s care is incredibly expensive.

One of Rory’s shoes fell off on a trip to visit his father’s family. The special insole was inside, so the family went to the media with a plea: help us find our son’s shoe.

Tammy was moved as she read about Rory.

“Losing Rory’s shoe is a huge blow as the insole costs many hundreds of pounds and was made exactly to fit his feet,” said Rory’s dad in the story posted on CornwallLive. Rory “relies on his insoles” to help him get the support he needs to be able to stand.

He added: “One day we hope that he will be able to walk, but for now he relies on his insoles to hold his feet in the correct position when standing in his support frame.”

The moment Tammy finished the story, she reached out to our friends  Dr. James Bloom and Dr. Adam Greenfield at Stanmore Chiropractic Clinic near London. Without hesitation, they agreed to help Rory any way they could.

This week, Rory’s family made the 200-mile trip to London so that Dr. Bloom and Dr. Greenfield could take scans and imprints of Rory’s feet.

Once Rory’s imprints arrive here in Roanoke, Virginia, we’ll make a pair of custom orthotics just for Rory at no charge to the family.

We’re excited for Rory to get his new custom orthotics, which should be arriving soon. You can read more about Rory’s story by liking his page on Facebook.  If you would like to give to support this little boy’s ongoing care, click here.

Because Rory’s case is complicated, the doctors took several foam impressions of his feet in addition to scanning his feet with the Foot Levelers 3D BodyView. The impressions and 3D images will be used to build Rory’s new pair of custom orthotics at our Roanoke, Virginia headquarters.

Supporting Those ‘Who Risk Their Lives to Keep Us Safe’

Team Foot Levelers was honored to kick off an unprecedented partnership with the brave men and women of Roanoke Fire-EMS this week, our hometown’s first responders. One-hundred and sixty-five of the Star City’s finest will be product-testing a new Foot Levelers orthotic top cover, designed for the toughest jobs and lifestyles!

The Roanoke Press Corps was also out in force to help share the news with our community. Check out some of their recent stories:

“Roanoke Fire-EMS is excited to partner with Foot Levelers on this exciting opportunity,” said Roanoke Fire-EMS Chief David Hoback. “We can’t wait to see how these custom products will benefit our firefighters.”

“Every new Foot Levelers product and product element must go through an intensive series of tests,” said Steve Stone, Foot Levelers Senior Vice President… “There aren’t many folks who work in tougher environments or who are harder on their feet and bodies than first responders; plus, as a company, we’re always looking for ways to give back…What better way than to support the selfless men and women who are out there every day risking their lives to keep us safe?”

Good news for our firefighters, who frequently suffer from back pain: a major clinical trial to be published in The Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation conclusively shows that Low Back Pain improves with Foot Levelers custom orthotics. We’ll be sharing more on this exciting development soon!

Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon: The Results are In!

The results are in!

brm-infographic-2017

America’s Toughest Road Marathon just keeps getting bigger, with 2,507 registered runners–an 11% increase over last year; 600 volunteers, a brand new (official) double marathon, 10 non-profit race beneficiaries, plus runners hailing from 43 states and nine countries.

Even though warnings of severe weather forced organizers to cancel the event about five hours in, reviews were glowing (thanks, folks!).

Runner Elizabeth R. Bain of California said this about the race in The Roanoke Times: “What really made this course shine (besides the gorgeous views from the tops of the mountains)? YOU, Roanoke! From the volunteers handing out bibs and shirts at packet pick-up, to the mimosa ‘aid station,’ to the guy driving the bus where I took my DNF [did not finish], everyone was so kind and friendly! Even though I’m a slow, back-of-the-pack runner, every aid station had cheers and cowbells and plenty of aid station supplies for me.”

We’re proud to support this incredible event every year, and congratulate all who dared to run America’s Toughest Road Marathon. An extra loud shout-out goes to our employees who got up at the crack of dawn to participate as runners or volunteer at the Star aid station!

It takes a village to host a marathon (Foot Levelers peeps in yellow giving out water, snacks, cheers and high fives to runners at the Star Aid Station)

Numbers about the economic impact should be out soon. Last year, the marathon generated more than $592,000, and over the past seven years, the it’s added more than $3.2 million to the local economy.

We Walk the Walk (and Run the Run)

Tomorrow’s the big day! The Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon gets underway bright and early at 7:30 a.m. and we couldn’t be more excited!

Not only is Foot Levelers the title sponsor, we have several employees who will be competing tomorrow in America’s Toughest Road Races.  We also have several dozen more signed up to cheer on runners and hand out waters and snacks at the Mill Mountain Star Aide Station.

FL RUNNERS

L-R, Meet our runners: Abby, Mike, Scott, Barto, Tammy, Wayne, and Tyler

Our Own Roanoke Star — in Training for America’s Toughest Road Marathon

Alyssa Rae from WSLS Channel 10 came and visited us yesterday to talk about our Workout for Payout program and how our own Abby Oliver is putting it to use while training for the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon! Alyssa interviewed both Kent and Abby and also shot some cool footage of Abby running part of the course!

Abby runs in our Brooks Adrenaline GTS 17 Shoethotics with InMotion custom orthotics. InMotion features silver for natural odor and moisture control and Celliant, which is research-proven to help increase blood oxygen levels in the body’s tissue for a boost of strength and stamina. Check out a short video of Abby in action on our Facebook page! We’ll post again when the WSLS story airs.

Breaktime Bliss

Our team works hard to build the world’s best custom-made orthotics, but like our CEO is fond of saying, “If you wear out your body, where are you going to live?” That’s why Foot Levelers offers our employees an on-site gym, free access to a personal trainer twice a week, and free, 100% employer-covered health insurance. Today, we welcomed a team of masseuses from Daniel’s Institute of Massage for a little break-time R&R! Many thanks to these talented professionals and a big shout-out to Foot Levelers’ People Department for bringing them in!

We’re Racing for the Cure and We Hope You Will, Too: Susan G. Komen & Foot Levelers

Meanwhile back at the ranch in Roanoke, Virginia, Foot Levelers’ hometown….

20170223_122616_burst01

L-R: Elizabeth Hand, Mission Coordinator, and Catherine Warren, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge

We welcomed two very special guests yesterday, Catherine and Elizabeth from Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge chapter. Elizabeth spoke to our employees about breast care and early warning signs of breast cancer, while Catherine was busy signing up employees for the Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge Race for the Cure on April 29th (a week after the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon).

20170223_1210341

Susan G. Komen’s mission is to “save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.” They do incredible, life-saving work raising awareness and if — when — a cure is developed, it will be thanks in part to the millions that Komen invests in research.  Now that’s a mission we can get behind.

Foot Levelers encourages all our employees to Race for the Cure, and we make it easy by covering everyone’s registration fees. That way folks can focus on what’s important: raising money for Komen!

A big shout out and thank you to Catherine and Elizabeth for their time today (and for the cupcakes!)!
