The Benefits of Custom Orthotics
Your feet are your body’s foundation, bearing all of its weight and keeping it stable. Any pain, deformity, or discomfort in your feet can compromise that stability and cause you to alter your foot alignment and/or normal gait, which in turn can lead to excessive stress on everything from your hip joints to your spine. When this happens, you may be tempted to solve your foot problems by picking up over-the-counter insoles. While that can certainly be cheap and easy to do, insoles and inserts from the supermarket or drugstore lack nearly every benefit that custom orthotics can deliver.
Here are just a few of the many advantages of custom orthotics over off-the-shelf shoe inserts and related products found at retailers:
Custom orthotics are made specifically to fit your feet. Their cost is based on the level of customization and quality of the product. Foot Levelers custom insoles are distributed by qualified healthcare professionals, who also determine the price of your custom made orthotics. Depending on your health care plan, your insurer may pay some of the cost of custom orthotics.
“Custom” is the key benefit of custom orthotics: Using the latest technologies (such as weight-bearing scans, 3D imaging, or foam castings), your orthotics will be hand-shaped and crafted just for you. That way you can treat the source of your problem and not only the symptoms. Even if you aren’t exhibiting symptoms, but have neurological deficits or biomechanical issues, custom orthotics can be the solution to your unique problem, whether it's pronation, supination, flat feet, plantar fasciitis, or other issues.
Since your feet are called upon to support your body and your health throughout all types of activities, you can have multiple orthotics that are customized to an activity, as well as to your feet and individual issues. With Foot Levelers, you can be in comfort when you’re on your feet at work, engaging in athletic activities, or dressed up for a night out. We even offer the first and only custom orthotics system designed for the separate stages of pregnancy.
Over-the-counter shoe inserts do not address one of the most important aspects of arch support, which is that there are three functional arches that together form what’s known as the plantar vault of the foot. The plantar vault includes the inner (medial longitudinal) arch, the outer (lateral longitudinal) arch, and the anterior transverse (metatarsal) arch across the balls of the feet.
Mass-produced insoles, or inserts, usually provide support for only one arch, while the other two arches receive no benefits. Over time, this lack of complete support for all three arches can actually cause feet to become flatter. Complete arch support, such as our custom orthotics, can relieve the pain you are experiencing today and prevent future pain by correcting your posture and compensating for any or all of your weakened arches.
Custom orthotics evenly distribute your body weight, which relieves joint discomfort and makes long hours spent on your feet easier. By redistributing your weight, custom orthotics can:
- Help correct poor posture, a common source of knee pain and stress
- Restore balanced function in the body by stabilizing and balancing your feet, which can lessen hip pain
- Ease ankle pain by reducing the strain that causes foot tendonitis
For some people, custom orthotics may resolve joint pain that might otherwise require surgical procedures or prescription medications.
In addition to helping alleviate pain in the feet, knees, hips, and even shoulders, custom orthotics have been shown to significantly reduce low back pain by more than 30 percent. According to the National Institutes of Health, low back pain is the single leading cause of disability around the world. It leads many people to turn to prescription opioids to find relief.
Custom orthotics address the foot-spine connection that is often a factor in low back pain, providing support for all three foot arches, stabilizing and balancing the pelvis, restoring proper function to the lower extremities, and much more—all without drugs.
If athletic activities are a regular part of your life, you may have experienced certain types of conditions or injuries that are common to your favorite sport or exercise. For example, basketball players may suffer from plantar fasciitis, while runners may have excessive pronation problems.
Custom-made orthotics can help prevent leg and hip injuries that may take you permanently off the track, field, or court by preventing the biomechanical foot problems and arch breakdown that often lead to problems. They can even improve your performance. In fact, Foot Levelers’ orthotics for athletes are constructed of high-performance materials that give you a propulsive boost during weight-bearing activities, enhance your stability, and absorb shock.
Whether you are a weekend warrior or an extreme endurance athlete, we offer custom orthotics for athletes at every skill level.
Most of us do not have perfect feet, and many could benefit from custom orthotics. If you are experiencing any of the following five symptoms, custom insoles could be particularly beneficial for:
- Pain and swelling: Feeling pain is the number one reason why individuals turn to custom orthotics. If you are in pain during everyday activities, such as walking and standing, orthotic insoles could be your answer. Some of the common types of pain our custom inserts help with are tendinitis, knee pain, and hip pain.
- Plantar fasciitis: Plantar fasciitis causes sharp heel pain, particularly first thing in the morning. Custom-made orthotics can provide heel cushioning and stabilizing, alleviating the discomfort of plantar fasciitis.
- High or low arches: Individuals with flat feet often experience foot and knee pain due to their feet rolling inward. Orthotics relieve pressure on the arch and reduce inward rolling. High arches may also cause foot pain, ankle problems, and calluses. Custom insoles can help align and stabilize low and high arches.
- Diabetic foot issues: Foot health is critical for persons with diabetes. Custom insoles distribute pressure evenly along the foot and can help alleviate common diabetic foot complications.
- Lower limb injury: If you recently suffered a lower limb injury, such as a leg, knee, or ankle problem, custom orthotics can keep your feet aligned and help you heal.

You should expect good-quality custom insoles to last around two to three years. Consider replacing your orthotics if you are experiencing discomfort or the insoles are beginning to show wear and tear. If you have recently lost weight or experienced an injury, ask your podiatrist to determine whether you need new custom insoles.
You may not necessarily have to wear your orthotic insoles 100% of the time. However, to get the most out of your insoles, it is best to wear them most of the time. Wearing your custom insoles when you are most likely to experience foot or leg pain, such as during long periods of standing or walking, can be critical for your foot health.
Your feet will require some time to adjust to orthotic insoles, and there may be a breaking-in period. When you receive your new custom orthotics, slowly incorporate them into your daily regimen, gradually increasing the time you wear them. You should be fully adjusted to your orthotics and feel the benefits of custom insoles after about four to six weeks.
Generally, you should remove the insoles or footbeds of your shoes and replace them with your custom orthotic insoles. Most shoes have a removable footbed or sole.
If your shoes do not allow you to remove the footbed, but there is enough space for an orthotic, you may be able to fit your custom insoles successfully. Your healthcare professional can advise you on wearing your custom orthotics properly.
Wearing socks can be vital during the break-in period of your new custom shoe inserts. Continuing to wear socks with your custom insoles can have numerous benefits, such as:
- Keeping your feet dry and preventing moisture build-up in your orthotics.
- Ensuring good hygiene and reducing odor.
- Protecting your feet from rubbing on the side of the shoe and developing blisters.
- Cushioning your feet during long periods of walking or running.
Maintain good hygiene by regularly spot cleaning your orthotic insoles.
Custom orthotics provide advanced arch support that differs significantly from mass-produced basic arch supports available in drugstores or shoe stores. Custom insoles are specifically manufactured to a cast or digital scan of your foot, which means they are unique and address your foot’s specific issues. Therefore, custom insoles provide superior and advanced arch support.
You may be more prone to developing plantar fasciitis if you have particularly high or low arches. Orthotic insoles can help treat the condition, and are a safe and non-invasive alternative to other options such as corticosteroid injections and over-the-counter pain medication. One major advantage of custom insoles is that they can reduce pain and improve function within a few weeks without any of the risks or side effects of medications.
