Knee Pain

Knee pain treatment?Knee pain can be alleviated using custom orthotics.

Overview

Knee pain may be a result of sudden injury, an overuse injury, or the symptom of an underlying condition, such as arthritis. Your doctor’s approach to treating your knee pain will depend on the underlying cause. But in most cases, treating your knee is more likely to be successful when the focus is on restoring balanced function in the entire body—starting from the ground up—rather than simply reducing the pain and inflammation in the irritated tissues. Chiropractic care plus custom orthotics can help.

Symptoms of Knee Pain

Symptoms of knee injury can include pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Treatment

Your Chiropractor is likely to use a combination of techniques to help your condition. These include using ice to reduce inflammation around the joint and some soft tissue massage to help improve the knee’s range of motion. In addition, the doctor can apply chiropractic manipulation and mobilization techniques in the knee as well as surrounding joints. Additional methods may include rest, heat, elevation, compression; strengthening exercises; and custom orthotics.

A thorough doctor will investigate if other alignment issues in other areas of the body may be the true cause of the knee pain, or at least contributing to it. For example, excessive foot pronation, limited range of motion in the hips, or tightness in the lower back, can place excessive strain on the knees which can be painful.

Prevention

Prevention techniques include keeping your bones and tissues strong and healthy through exercise and diet. Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol use as these can weaken bones and cause problems with the blood supply in the extremities. Reduce your risk of injury by adhering to safety measures on the job and beyond (like wearing a seatbelt). Some people use knee braces to prevent knee injuries or after a knee injury. Custom orthotics can provide additional support, stability, and shock absorption from the ground.

Recovery

Recovery time will vary depending on the cause. Rest, ice, heat, elevation, compression; plus strengthening exercises may improve recovery time.

In most cases, treating your knee is more likely to be successful when the focus is on restoring balanced function in the entire body—starting from the ground up—rather than simply reducing the pain and inflammation in the irritated tissues. Chiropractic care plus custom made orthotics can help.
